Display Font Design
April, 2002

Another project during my level VI graphic design class, Advanced Typography, was a spinoff from our semester long research of a typographer. I had been studying Adrian Frutiger, and had conducted an in-depth typeface analysis of Univers.

I was asked to develop a unique display font that was either a hybrid of two existing faces, or a completely new creation. My typeface, named Iris, utilized the lowercase ‘i’ in each of the 26 uppper and lowercase characters. I used a medium weight stroke, and attempted to keep a loose and playful feel while still not sacrificing readability.

Recently, I purchased font encoding software, and was able to import each of the glyphs into a character map, which I then exported as an open type font.
