Adrian Frutiger Mini Biography

During my level VI graphic design class, Advanced Typography, I spent a major portion of the semester researching one typographer. I chose to study Swiss designer, Adrian Frutiger, who developed Univers, Hevetica Neue as well as many other popular 20th century type faces.

The semester was broken up into smaller projects, each that attributed to this resulting book. I was first asked to write a research paper, and obtain graphics and illustrations. From there, I selected one of the Frutiger’s typefaces and conducted an in-depth analysis of the letterforms in both upper and lower cases. Once this was finished, I was ready to compile the information into a short biography.

The book was required to have the basic components: a cover, half title page, title page, dedication, table of contents, body pages, works cited and a colophon. Format and size was left up to each designer, so I chose to work in a 6x9 inch spiral-bound size, with a wrapped cover and locking tab. Throughout the book design, I attempted to illustrate the precision of 20th century design with clean layouts. I also explored the functionality of shorter velum sheets overlaying each of the body pages. Printed on the overlays were the lowercase characters of Univers, which ran off the edge of the overlay to match up and continue into the outside margins.

The cover was printed on a wide-format inkjet printer and mounted to a heavier stock. The inside pages and velum sheets were printed using a digital laser printer.
