Super G Pasta Package Redesign
May, 2002

This was a project during my level IV graphic design class, Word & Image. The assignment was to select a product from a grocery store that I felt could use a packaging face lift, then rework the design. The only stipulation was that it had to be pasta or light bulbs.

I selected Giant food stores brand Super G pastas, redesigning packages for Penne Rigate and Thin Spaghetti. The original packages were standard rectangular shapes with a cliché Italian red, green and white decoration.

For my design, I experimented with scanning the actual product, which led me to the decision that it could make for a really fun façade. This choice gave the box a transparent feel, and my decision to add the dye cuts enhanced this effect.

To give Giant an edge over other generic brands, I felt the need to see how a three panel box would work as opposed to the traditional squares and rectangles. Each of the two front panels are carefully crafted to work on a horizontal and vertical shelf orientation, allowing the store different presentation options.

I decided to eliminate the green completely, and work in just a three-tone spectrum, using yellow, red and brown to execute color. In addition to the box design, I also spent a little time on the brand for Super G, taking it from it’s blocked, stretched G to a more visually appealing modernist look and feel. The mock boxes were printed on an iris proofer, then wrapped around the box construction.
